Да, вы всё поняли верно, в Thunder Over Michigan принимал участие российский самолёт. Это учебная версия истребителя МиГ-23М, которая принадлежала бывшему пилоту ВМС США Дэну Филеру (Dan Filer). Он летал на Grumman A-6 Intruder.

МиГ-23М имел бортовой номер N23UB. Двое пилотов катапультироваться, после чего истребитель врезался в землю и взорвался. Лётчиков удалось достать из воды, куда они приземлились. Информации о травмах нет.
